Introduction

Hello everyone! My name is Diana and I am majoring in Art after switching from Health Sciences. Out of all the careers in art, animation has caught my attention the most but I am open to learning about different careers. I haven't taken any other art courses prior to this semester but I am very excited to do so! This is actually my second semester at CSUP, I was at PPCC before coming to Pueblo.

At the moment I don't really have a favorite artist since there are so many I like and so many different art styles. Recently, I have been getting back into drawing after a long break from it. Besides drawing, I enjoy music and playing instruments.

When I am not in school, I enjoy spending most of my time with my family. Here is Oreo, the youngest of my family.

Hello, is there a certain type of art style you gravitate toward? I personally am going for my art major as well with a minor in media communications. Hope to work with you in future classes.

Hi! At the moment I haven't seen myself gravitate toward a specific type of art style but I feel that is because I am constantly seeing different art styles on social media nearly every day. I wish you the best with your plans! I hope to work with you in future classes too.

Hello! Nice to meet you too! I played the flute for some years and started learning to play the piano a couple of years ago but it has been a while since I have played. I hope to learn how to play even more instruments too.

Edo People,  Iyoba Pendant Mask , 16th c., ivory, iron, copper       Although it may be a mask, the Iyoba Pendant Mask it is not actually meant to be worn as a one, but instead as an adornment. This would be done by attaching the mask to the person’s hip. The mask was made to specifically recognize the Queen Mother of Benin, Idia, for her contribution to the kingdom.      Idia wanted to secure the future of the kingdom. After the King of Benin died, there were two possible successors from different mothers, rival sons. Idia, mother of Oba Esigie, strategically succeeded in securing her son to be the next king. The mask represents her as a strong, ruthless, and intelligent person, which is supported by how successful she was in making Esigie the next king. Her determination shows in how much she fought for her son to continue the lineage. The mask tells the story of how hereditary positions of power play in royalty. Even though Esigie ...

“Indrajit meets with Ravana, then binds Rama and Laksmana with magic serpents; Sita is told they are dead,”  c. 1650-52, watercolor on paper Throughout the whole art piece, there are various poses, gestures, and colors. All of these elements come together to portray several events across different timelines. Each scene being portrayed is from the ancient Indian epic poem Ramayana. The story centers around the confrontation of good and evil. While centering around good and evil, it also focuses on the human condition, where the characters experience various emotions. Loss, love, fear, and other topics are encountered throughout the story. While looking at the painting, some of these topics are visible in the scenes. Without knowing that the painting is about the poem, Ramayana, a person could have their own interpretation about what is going on. However, once knowing that the painting depicts scenes from Ramayana, you can see which characters there are and where they are. ...

Judith Leyster,  Self-Portrait ,  c. 1633, oil on canvas In the painting above, Judith Leyster promotes herself as a professional artist in the self-portrait. As a woman it was rare to be a professional artist, but her painting depicts her as someone confident in what they do. The confidence is conveyed with her relaxed posture in the chair. Even though at first glance the painting does not seem to be in Baroque style because religion is not included, the painting still contains characteristics of the style. Without the dramatic energy and religion, Judith Leyster paints in a Northern Baroque style. The composition of the painting creates closeness leaving very little space between the viewer and the painting. The emphasis of her self-portrait becomes more obvious as she paints herself dressed up to show her importance and her profession. Originally a self-portrait was painted on the canvas shown in the painting. She most likely decided on painting something else to...
